Teen Rec Night: I Am Because We Are (IABWA) is Philadelphia Youth Basketball's basketball-centered mentorship program for teens ages 14–19. Built around the power of basketball and a safe, welcoming "third space" outside of home and school, Teen Rec Night gives young people a place to connect, grow, and lead alongside caring mentors and peers.
Rooted in the African philosophy of ubuntu—"I am because we are"—the program encourages teens to recognize the strength of community, build meaningful relationships, and develop the confidence to positively impact those around them.
Each Teen Rec Night includes:
- 🏀 Open gym, basketball, and recreational activities
- 🤝 Mentorship and leadership development
- 💼 Career readiness and workforce exploration
- 💬 Social-emotional learning and life skills
- 🎮 Workshops based on teen interests, including financial literacy, entrepreneurship, STEM, esports, music, media, and more
- 🥪 Snacks and a safe, supportive environment to connect with friends and trusted adults
Whether teens are working to improve their game, preparing for future careers, or simply looking for a positive place to spend their evenings, Teen Rec Night provides opportunities to build leadership, explore new interests, and become part of a community that believes everyone has something valuable to contribute.
